Cyanobacterial blooms in oligotrophic lakes: Shifting the high?nutrient paradigm

چکیده
Freshwater cyanobacterial blooms have become ubiquitous, posing major threats to ecological and public health. Decades of research focused on understanding drivers these with a primary focus eutrophic systems; however, also occur in oligotrophic systems, but received far less attention, resulting gap our overall. In this review, we explore evidence freshwater systems provide explanations for those occurrences. We show that through their unique physiological adaptations, cyanobacteria are able thrive under wide range environmental conditions, including low-nutrient waterbodies. contend fully understand blooms, thereby mitigate manage them, must expand inquiries consider along the trophic gradient, not solely thus shifting high-nutrient paradigm trophic-gradient paradigm.

cyanobacterial blooms and their toxicity in vojvodina lakes, serbia
the presence of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) is a significant indicator of water quality, having in mind that several genera have the quality of producing cyanotoxins, which are harmful to animals, plants and humans. seven lakes in vojvodina (republic of serbia) were examined in may and september 2007 for cyanobacterial presence and cyanotoxins content, chl a concentration and index of phosph...
متن کاملLake Level Fluctuations Boost Toxic Cyanobacterial “Oligotrophic Blooms”
Global warming has been shown to strongly influence inland water systems, producing noticeable increases in water temperatures. Rising temperatures, especially when combined with widespread nutrient pollution, directly favour the growth of toxic cyanobacteria. Climate changes have also altered natural water level fluctuations increasing the probability of extreme events as dry periods followed ...
متن کاملGloeotrichia echinulata blooms in an oligotrophic lake: helpful insights from eutrophic lakes
Nuisance algal blooms are widely reported from eutrophic and hypereutrophic systems, but are relatively rare in oligotrophic systems. Recently, the cyanobacterium Gloeotrichia echinulata has begun blooming in oligotrophic to mesotrophic lakes in the northeastern USA. We explored whether existing knowledge about G. echinulata, derived from eutrophic systems, would be useful in predicting the rec...
متن کاملMonitoring of Harmful Cyanobacterial Blooms
Nowcasting of harmful algal blooms is important both for the public and for environmental management purposes. In the Baltic Sea, summer blooms of nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria, are regular phenomena but the past years intense and widespread blooms have caused major environmental concern due to its nuisance, increased nitrogen input and toxicity. One of the most abundant species Nodularia sp. c...
متن کاملControlling cyanobacterial harmful blooms in freshwater ecosystems
Cyanobacteria's long evolutionary history has enabled them to adapt to geochemical and climatic changes, and more recent human and climatic modifications of aquatic ecosystems, including nutrient over-enrichment, hydrologic modifications, and global warming. Harmful (toxic, hypoxia-generating, food web altering) cyanobacterial bloom (CyanoHAB) genera are controlled by the synergistic effects of...
